Breaking is not making?

The construction on the square near Olimpiyskiy stadium started more than five years ago. In 2002 Kyiv city council allocated almost three hectares for the construction of Troitskiy trading center at the entrance of the central stadium of the country.

Later General Prosecutor’s office and the President of Ukraine protested against these actions but it was too late: the center already has several levels below the ground and three floors above.

Last Thursday, February 7, became the turning point of this story. The main owner of the trading center Vadym Novinskiy signed the memorandum about demolition of the construction.

Common sense suggests that breaking is not making. It took five years to grow up this architectural monster and we may hope that it will take a bit less time to reverse the process.

On Wednesday our reporters visited the site to see the deconstruction. Only one crane out of two was working. There were not more than ten workers at the site who were mostly eating their lunch.

What do they say in FFU?

FFU vice-president Boris VOSKRESENSKIY says that the things can still go either way...

-Yudzhin sent the case to the economic court. The session was two days ago but Yuzhin lawyers appealed and the case went to the court of appeals. The day of hearing is not scheduled yet.

- What is the subject of the case?

- Investors defend their position. They want compensation for their expenses on construction.

- Everybody wants to know when do the deconstruction works start?

- Yudzhin signed the memorandum and has to fulfill it. The above ground building should be demolished completely. However the situation is uncertain. Although the main document has been signed, the legal process continues. I think all subjects of argument had to be covered in the memorandum in order to automatically stop the lawsuit.

- It seems that the workers are not in hurry to dismantle their constructions?

- They are making preparations now. Currently they are deconstructing metal fixtures, then they have to disassemble building cranes. This will last two weeks.

What do they say in Yudzhin?

The conversation with OOO Yudzhin and Troitskiy center project manager Serhiy Ovchinnikov made us think that the developer company does not want to retreat from the Fizkulturnaya square as soon as possible.

- Serhiy, can you comment on the deconstruction works at the square.

- There are no official deconstruction works yet.

- We were at the site today. The building crane was working...

- Masters are removing falsework and clearing the territory from unnecessary objects, that’s all.

- What will happen next?

- No comments.

- Who can comment on the situation on behalf of Yudzhin?

- Nobody is going to answer any questions.

- Maybe it is because the negotiations on the sum of compensations still continue?

- No comments. Perhaps you should ask the shareholders of the constructions.

- Who are they?

- If you don’t know who the shareholders are, what are we talking about?

- We know only that Vadym Novinskiy on behalf of Yudzhin has signed the memorandum on demolition of the building and it should be fulfilled.

- Yes, the memorandum has been signed. What will happen next? There is nothing to talk about yet.
