Karpaty once again had problems in the beginning of the game. They were lacking pace and Shakhtar made use of that soon. Ten minutes into the game Hladkiy broke clear of the defenders and pushed the ball in past Nalepa – 0:1. Shakhtar continued to enjoy more ball possession and could make up to 40 passes in a row in the Karpaty’s half.
However Karpaty weren’t the only side to make mistakes in this match. Hosts felt that Donetsk Brazilians became a bit careless and sent Khudobyak down the right flank. Defenders prevented him from crossing into the area but Ihor threw the ball in straight at Godwin who crossed it towards the goalkeeping box. Feschuk got ahead of Yezerskiy and headed the ball into the back of the net leaving Pyatov stranded – 1:1.
Shakhtar once again went forward and scored two goals in the space of several minutes. First Fernandinho headed the ball in after the corner while nobody marked him and soon after that Brandao went one-on-one with Nalepa, rounded him and put the ball into the empty net – 1:3.
After the break Karpaty began to push forward more and once managed to humiliate Donetsk defense. Tkachuk robbed Hubschman of the ball and passed to Feschuk who couldn’t shoot but instead laid it off to Khudobyak. The right winger didn’t think long and rifled the ball towards the net – 2:3. Once again Pyatov didn’t move although he couldn’t help his team in this situation.
It happened on 50 minutes and Karpaty didn’t attack in numbers as there was still plenty of time to equalize. However they failed to create more chances until the end of the game. In the last minute Shakhtar were awarded the free kick. Srna took it and the ball hit the crossbar and bounced clear. Ischenko and Hladkiy battled to win the rebound and the Shakhtar fell in the area. The referee awarded the penalty although the video replay clearly showed there wasn’t any. Brandao scored to secure the visitors’ victory – 2:4.
Mircea Lucescu, Shakhtar head coach:
- It wasn’t a simple match. We are under pressure and cannot lose points. Maybe this causes those childish blunders. It is bad the match started in 2 PM. It was difficult for the players and I understand them. We scored three goals in the first half and I thought the game was as good as over. But Karpaty became more aggressive after the break and kept our defense under pressure. The result corresponds with what was on the pitch. We deserved the three points although I didn’t like the game much.
Valeriy Yaremchenko, Karpaty head coach:
- Our players were too scared and lacked constructive play in the beginning. I understand they don’t have much experience but they could play calmer after the scoreline became 1:3. After the break they pulled themselves together, clawed one goal back and needed to score one more. We could draw this match. We could play better against Shakhtar although their players’ class is higher. It is not a tragedy. Our players who have more experience in the championship should have taken the role of leader and take the team forward. I cannot say that they lacked devotion but there were more emotions.
