The national team messed it up
They were just out of luck
There were no chances since the beginning because we got WC-2006 finalists in our group
We could be third but Scotland was too good

Ukraine 2:0 Serbia
Shevchenko 55, Nazarenko 58
Kernozenko, Nesmachniy, Mandzyuk, Tymoschuk, Chyhrynskiy, Shevchenko (Hladkiy 88), Holaydo (Vorobey 89), Husev (Hay 55), Voronin (Milevskiy 77), Dopilka, Nazarenko Stojkovic, Rukavina, Vidic (Rnic 73), Ivanovic, Smiljanic (Kovacevic 83), Lazovic (Jovanovic 46), Sulejmani (Tosic 83), Stankovic (Jankovic 73), Lukovic, Zigic (Ilic 70), Kuzmanovic
Voronin 74 Lazovic 32, Zigic 61

Both sides started the game fervently and with a will. The pace was fast as the teams allowed each other to play more or less freely. Voronin and Shevchenko, both missing the big football, showed the most devotion. Ukrainian captain tried to do everything both in attack and defense, Voronin did the same and dangerous episodes happened regularly near Serbian goal. First Nazarenko made a great through pass for Shevchenko sending him one-on-one with Stojkovic but the keeper was the first to the ball. Serbians responded with Zigic’s header after the corner that was saved by Kernozenko.

Then came the turn for long shots. Shevchenko shot from the free kick and Stojkovic gathered the ball in the corner. Tymoschuk shot from 25 meters and the keeper once again was ready to save it. Then Kuzmanovic blasted from 26 meters and Kernozenko could only parry the ball.

Meanwhile the initiative that Ukraine had at the beginning of the game slowly faded away and visitors became braver. Sometimes their long positional attacks caused danger near Kernozenko’s goal. On 37 minutes Lazovic received the ball from Zigic and shot towards the far corner but the ball whistled over the bar.

The second half started calmly but it was the calmness before the storm. After seven or eight minutes of play in the middle of the pitch goalscoring opportunities started to appear. First Nesmachniy lost the duel in the air to Zigic but the Serbian hit the sidenetting. Then it was Ukraine’s turn. Stojkovic had problems turning Tymoschuk’s long shot behind. After the resulting corner the ball fell to Holaydo who shot from the edge of the area. Shevchenko changed the ball’s direction at the six-yard box line and it flew into the back of the net – 1:0. Holaydo did well on his debut for the national team while the Chelsea forward proved that he hadn’t lost his goal feeling.

The second goal happened just three minutes later. Voronin received the diagonal pass in the area and laid the ball off to Nazarenko who blasted it into the bottom left corner – 2:0. Stojkovic leapt for the ball but was unable to stop it.

Serbs tried to overtake the initiative but their actions were too unvaried while Mykhaylichenko’s side showed good mobility of its lines. The home team acted as a single organism and often launched fast counterattacks. Tymoschuk’s and Nesmachniy’s shots went wide and Stojkovic had problems tipping away Shevchenko’s sudden shot on 69 minutes. Immediately after that Ukrainian captain could make the double as he got his head to the flank cross but sent the ball inches higher of the goal.

On 77 minutes Voronin made his last shot of the match (again saved by Stojkovic) and was replaced by Milevskiy who immediately ran into Serbian penalty area for the corner. Chyhrynskiy won the ball in the air and headed it towards the top far corner but missed. Milevskiy came into the spotlight later when he broke into the area from the right and shot into the near corner but his shot was stopped by the keeper. Three minutes after that Artem made a great pass to Tymoschuk but Rnic was there in time to make a long saving tackle.

Serbs lacked sharpness in the end of the game. Their substitutions failed to improve their play and even made it worse by ruining the links in the midfield that were built in the first half. The only episode worth attention, Lukovic’s shot into the near corner that was skillfully saved by Kernozenko, happened when the Serbian player strayed offside.
